The Open Access Foundation (OAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to widening access to research, education, and scholarly knowledge. Our work is guided by a simple idea: knowledge creates greater public value when people are able to reach it, understand it, reuse it, and contribute to it.
Open access is more than making a document free to read. It is part of a broader effort to reduce structural barriers between knowledge and the people who can benefit from it. Researchers need discoverable literature. Students need affordable learning resources. Educators need materials they can reuse and adapt. Institutions and communities need tools that make sharing knowledge practical, sustainable, and inclusive.
Why Open Access Matters
Research and education increasingly depend on digital infrastructure, yet access to useful knowledge remains uneven. Subscription barriers, fragmented discovery systems, limited institutional resources, and differences in technical capacity can all restrict participation. These barriers affect not only individual readers but also the speed at which ideas can circulate across disciplines, institutions, and countries.
OAF supports an open knowledge environment in which access is treated as a foundation for participation. When scholarly and educational resources are easier to discover and use, more people can learn from existing work, test ideas, collaborate across boundaries, and create new knowledge.
Our Mission
Promote Open Access
We work to break down barriers to knowledge by supporting models, resources, and infrastructure that make research and educational materials more openly available. We believe access should be designed into knowledge systems rather than treated as an afterthought.
Enable Global Collaboration
Knowledge is strengthened when it can move across institutions, disciplines, and geographic boundaries. OAF seeks to foster partnerships among researchers, educators, organizations, and communities that share an interest in more open and connected knowledge systems.
Support Digital Innovation
Open access increasingly depends on good technology. We support the use and development of digital tools that improve discovery, preservation, sharing, learning, and responsible reuse of scholarly resources.
What We Work On
Our activities are organized around practical projects that can expand access to knowledge. These include open research discovery and repository initiatives, educational resources that can be used by learners and teachers, and grant support for projects aligned with open access and public benefit.
We are especially interested in work that connects openness with usability. Making information technically available is important, but meaningful access also depends on whether people can find it, understand it, trust it, and use it effectively.
Our Approach
OAF takes a collaborative and infrastructure-oriented approach. We look for opportunities where relatively focused interventions—better discovery, clearer access pathways, reusable educational materials, shared technical resources, or targeted support—can create wider benefits for research and learning communities.
We also recognize that open access is not a single model. Different disciplines, institutions, and communities operate under different conditions. Sustainable openness therefore requires flexible approaches, responsible governance, and attention to the needs of both knowledge creators and knowledge users.
Work With Us
We welcome conversations with researchers, educators, institutions, nonprofit organizations, technical communities, and others working toward more open and equitable access to knowledge. If you would like to discuss a partnership, project, resource, or grant-related idea, please contact us.
